Over the past 2 years Steadfast Systems has been focused on one thing, redefining the tool buying process. We wanted to find comfort that the tools we might rely on in our trucks were the right tools.
Walking to work; I realized my wife’s GX 460 had no tools in it. I figured I would search around the internet for a kit that was specific to her GX. Bam, problem solved. After a couple of evenings researching, I found no such product, or even a list of tools that was more than the old saying, “Know not? Bring a lot!” I sat perplexed as a maintainer of her GX and of my Tacoma, I went through the trucks on the lift and started investigating.
While looking at the GX and Tacoma on the lift I took note of the common places that failures occur at on the road, things like suspension, body mounts, skid plates, interior pieces, drain plugs, and fasteners that might have to be removed or tightened.
Pulling out my “trusty” tool kit in my 2012 Tacoma, built from vintage Craftsman, I took inventory of what was required to work on it. I was startled and somewhat frustrated that for nearly 5 years 100,000 miles, I didn’t have the tools I needed with me. A pile of SAE wrenches and sockets, no breaker bar, limited metric sockets, an adjustable wrench, a set of gloves and some screw drivers were all that I had. I stared at my wife with a look of surprise and dismay. “We would have been screwed.” I told her.
After deciding that both trucks needed a re-fit of tools, I started making lists of tools. I knew I would have to be calculated picking tools, the Tacoma is such a compact truck with little storage, and the GX being the wife’s daily meant they had to be a low profile solution.
We bought some US Made Tool rolls and I started picking tools out of my toolbox, and marking them off of my list. I realized another problem; the tools needed to maintain and repair the trucks were much larger than the tool rolls we had gotten.
Frustrated, I grabbed a piece of paper out and drew the first version of what is today the Modular Tool Roll (MTR). 7 versions and 18 months later, we have a tool roll system that fits tools that professionals would use to maintain or repair these vehicles.
I have worked, or professionally tinkered for most of my adult life, metal fabrication, machining, and wrenching on trucks, shops that made money had good quality, organized tools in them. Shops that were struggling had cheap disorganized arrays of tools with missing parts. I watched many of my friends go into debt with various tool truck brands, spending thousands of dollars in tools. I didn’t want a tool kit that would be four or five grand. I knew there was alternatives to the tool-truck price without the sacrifice in quality.
German brands like Knipex, Gedore, American brands like Trusty Cook, Wright, and Proto; and others from Canada like Megapro, and Japan, like Koken. All of these brands meet a specific need, are reasonably priced, and exceptionally well built. Truly tool-truck tools without the tool-truck prices.
